Document preparation support: getting your own paperwork organised, in plain English

Educational help building a clean, ordered set of the paperwork people are commonly asked for during a UK mortgage application — knowing what the categories are, what looks missing or out of date, and how to keep it tidy.

What it is not: It is not mortgage advice, not document verification or certification, not a statement that any document set is sufficient for a lender, not an eligibility or affordability assessment, and not a submission service. Before You Apply is not FCA authorised and has no lender access.

Who it may be useful for

  • People who find mortgage paperwork the most stressful part of preparing
  • Anyone whose records are scattered across apps, emails and paper
  • Self-employed applicants and people with variable income who want their own evidence set out clearly
  • Anyone who wants a filing approach they can actually maintain over several months

Who it is not for

  • Anyone who needs documents verified, certified or accepted — that is for a lender or a qualified professional
  • Anyone who wants paperwork submitted to a lender or adviser on their behalf
  • Anyone who needs accountancy, tax or legal work
  • Anyone looking for a mortgage recommendation or a decision on eligibility

What you would receive

  • A checklist reflecting the circumstances and income types you describe
  • Guidance on presenting your own documents clearly and consistently
  • A gap review: what appears missing, unclear or likely to be out of date
  • A simple naming and folder structure you can keep using
  • A short list of items worth clarifying with an adviser or your lender

Limitations and exclusions

  • No preparation, alteration, certification or verification of any document
  • No statement that a document set is complete or sufficient for any lender
  • No submission of anything to a lender or adviser
  • No accountancy, tax, legal or credit-repair service
  • No guarantee about application speed, cost or outcome

How it would work, step by step

  1. 1. Profile

You select the profiles that apply: employed, self-employed, first-time buyer, mover, remortgage, gifted deposit.

  2. 2. Build the list

A printable checklist is produced, grouped by category, using the free document checklist builder as the starting point.

  3. 3. Gap review

You work through what you hold, what is outstanding and what needs refreshing, noting anything you would want to explain in your own words.

  4. 4. Pack it up

You finish with an ordered set of your own documents and a short covering summary you have written yourself.

Questions

Do you check whether my documents are acceptable to a lender?
No. Only a lender can decide what evidence it will accept. This is educational help organising your own paperwork so you can see what you hold and what looks incomplete or out of date.
Do I upload documents to you?
No. There is no upload feature and no confidential financial information is requested. You keep your own paperwork throughout.
Is this mortgage advice?
No. It is preparation support only. For advice on a mortgage, speak to a suitably qualified FCA-authorised mortgage adviser.
How is this different from the free document checklist builder?
The free builder produces a printable list based on the profiles you select. This service would add a structured gap review and a simple filing and naming approach you can maintain yourself.
Will being organised make my application succeed?
No one can promise that. Clear, consistent paperwork tends to reduce avoidable back-and-forth, but every lending decision is the lender's.
Can I buy this now?
No. It is not on sale. Scope, pricing and terms still require final review, and no payment can be taken.
