How we research, write and review content
This page sets out the rules our content follows. It applies to every guide, hub, tool and page on Before You Apply, including this one.
How content is researched and sourced
We start from what is generally understood about how UK mortgage applications work: the categories of evidence commonly requested, broad process steps, and terminology. Where a claim depends on a specific statistic, a regulator's position or a named source, we do not publish it until that source has been checked directly and can be cited accurately.
We cite or we omit. There is no middle option. A confident-sounding sentence with no traceable source is treated the same as a wrong one: it does not get published. Where a guide currently has an unverified claim placeholder, it is shown openly as a placeholder rather than hidden or dressed up as fact.
How content is labelled, reviewed and dated
Every guide displays an author, a reviewer, a drafted-on date and a review-due status near the top of the page. Where a reviewer's credentials are not yet confirmed, we say so rather than implying expertise that has not been verified. See the editorial team and review page for the current state of independent review.
The non-advice boundary
Nothing on this site is mortgage advice, a personal recommendation, an eligibility assessment or a guarantee of any outcome. Content is written to explain general patterns and help you organise information, never to tell you what you personally should do. Any sentence that starts to sound like a personal recommendation is rewritten or removed before publication.
Illustrative examples
Some guides include a short illustrative example to show how a step of preparation might play out. Every example is clearly labelled "Illustrative example (not a real case)" and describes a made-up scenario used purely to show sequencing or reasoning. No example is based on a real client, enquiry or testimonial, because we have none to draw on.
Authorship and use of AI
Content is drafted and edited in house by the Before You Apply editorial desk, currently one person. Where AI-assisted tools are used during drafting or editing, they are used to help structure or tighten writing that a human has directed, checked and takes responsibility for. AI tools are not used to generate factual claims, statistics or citations, and any output is reviewed against this editorial policy before publication.
Commercial arrangements
Before You Apply currently has no commercial arrangement with any lender, mortgage adviser firm, product provider or comparison service, and receives no commission, referral fee or free product in exchange for coverage. If that ever changes, the arrangement will be disclosed clearly on this page and on any affected content before it takes effect, not retrospectively.
Current state
No commercial arrangements exist. This section will be updated the moment that changes.
